MCA #2 | Thursday Afternoon

Silver and Rey were going to try cooking lessons again. Well, they were moving on to baking this time. He thought it ended well the last time but when it came down to it he actually hadn't learned anything about cooking. Hopefully this time will end up better on the learning front.

How hard could it be to bake some chocolate chip cookies, really. Children do it on TV commercials all the time.

"There's a lot of measurements on here."

"Do you want to measure it out or shall I?" he asked. "Do you trust me with it?"

"I absolutely trust you to measure it," she told him, though she did hand him the correct measuring cup.

That was probably a wise decision.

"Brave of you," he joked, taking the cup. He did measure out everything properly, leveling it out and everything without having to be told to.

He did get some flour on his hands by the time he had finished, which he flicked over at Rey. Lovingly.

"That is not where flour goes," she told him, laughing.

"I'm pretty sure the recipe said to do that," he said with an innocent shrug.

"It didn't," she said, dipping her finger into the flour to dot some on the top of his nose. "That, however..."

"It helps with the baking process," he said with a grin. He didn't bother wiping the flour off as he looked over the recipe again. "Now--what is the difference between baking soda and baking powder?"

"I'm not sure except that it's important somehow," Rey told him. "I know I have the right one because no one told me they were horrible while we were decorating for the party."

He laughed. "They could have also just been nice since you were letting them use your apartment."

"How dare you," Rey teased.

"Hey, I'm just exploring all the options," he said, laughing. "I thought your cookies were good but we already know I don't have a discerning palate."

"You are not helping yourself here," she told him.

[long_memory]

"I'm just saying--these cookies will be the real test," he said. "If they're good despite me being involved I think you could be considered a master baker."

"I'd be more concerned with actually finishing them," Rey pointed out.

"Right, of course, back to work," he said, trying to look serious. "What's the next step?"

"We need one and a half teaspoons salt," she read. "Now to Google which one is a teaspoon..."

"And you said this would get easier," he joked. "I would guess it's the spoon that doesn't have a 'b' on it."

He didn't know much, but he knew teaspoon didn't have a b in it.

"...the spoon has a B on it?" Rey asked. News to her!

"Yeah, they're both engraved," he said, picking one of the measuring spoons up and looking at it closely. "I guess to keep people like us from screwing it up."

"Google does just as well," Rey said. "Though I guess we should do it right and use the B spoon."

"I will follow your lead," he said, reaching for the spoon. "Don't you find it odd we're adding salt to something that's supposed to be sweet?"

"Kind of. But there's... two and a half cups of sugar so maybe the tiny bit of salt helps?" Rey shrugged.

"Who are we to argue with the recipe?" he said, shrugging back at her. "It's probably been handed down through generations."

Or, you know. It was from some mommyblog from someone who cut her children's sandwiches into fun shapes.

"I don't think Epicurious has been around for generations," she smiled, reaching over to finally wipe the flour off his nose.

"I might have wanted that there," he said with a smile.
